This single-gear, No clutch, Belt drive, 500 c.c., Four-stroke machine, started life in 1913 at the 1913 Isle of Man T.T. Race.
B.S.A works rider Kenneth Holden was down to rise a 2-speed machine.
During late practice, the 2-speed gear gave trouble & Kenneth opted to ride his practice machine (this one) in the race.
Early in the race, the rider & machine retired after a crash (at Kirk Braddan).
Of the 7 B.S.A Machines entered only one survived, R. Carey in 17th position.
Since the early 1970s's This machine has been somewhat luckier.
During this time it has gained over 250 awards for performance in V.M.C.C. Events.
It has taken part in 8 international Anglo-Dutch events being on the winning side on 7 occasions and overall best performance twice.
The machine has been extensively ridden, taking part in events in England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France, Belgium and Holland.
In 1983 The machine gained a Silver medal on a trip from Lands End to John O'groats.
The event was a re-run of a 1910 International six-day trial - a journey of over 1,000 miles.
The machine has won the V.M.C.C. South Western Veteran championship 20 times & has successfully completed innumerable pioneer runs to Brighton.
Recently this machine climbed Porlock Hill to the great satisfaction of its rider!
The Model D, which first appeared in 1912 and cost £48, was referred to as the "TT Model" with many sporting riders appreciating its lightweight. This example is thought to have been one of the 1913 works bikes ridden by Kenneth Holden in the Senior TT. Displayed in a private collection for several years, it has previously been used extensively in various Pioneer events.
