The vendor of this 1972 VW 1600 TE Fastback is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:
When we purchased MHS 292L the face mask was still a must-have accessory, a TV news quiz host called Boris Johnson was the Prime Minister and Abba were top of the album charts.
We’ve been on a real Voyage with this motor and Mamma Mia have we spent some Money, Money Money but that’s the Name Of The Game and now we are Head Over Heels….it really is Super (Trouper).
Our infinite dithering, a distinct lack of parts this side of the 1980s and a couple of very busy restorers meant that it took its time but now the Fastback is back with us and wow does it look stunning.
When we discovered this rare VW it appeared rather different. It would be defamatory to the integrity of barns to describe it as a barn find.
It was a shed…and not one of tongue and groove construction but rather low-grade shiplap held together with nails rather than thoughtfully placed countersunk screws.
Off it was sent to the wonderful pair of Jonny May and Mark Juggins near Malton. We are amazed they’ve ever forgiven us.
They began the dizzy task of nut and bolting our heap of rust…cracking on just as soon as Ken Bruce had finished Popmaster (he was still on Radio 2 at the time) and the custard creams had been shifted.
It would be much quicker to provide a list of work that hasn't been done. But here goes:
We now think our Fastback is one of the most wonderful cars we’ve ever restored, we challenge you to find better or one that has received quite so many years of love and attention.
Please Note: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
