The ‘Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics’ team write:
The Audi 100 was the uber-coolest of early 90’s family wagons.
The estate came with a new rakish back, terrible for transporting the old living room sideboard but prolific at generating admiring glances at the tip when you disposed of your faded furniture.
In fact this estate car was so aspirational it wasn’t even called an ‘estate’…it was an ‘Avant’.
When we saw a metallic grey example in the yard at Pickering in October 2022, we thought we’d like a piece of Audi history. Bought for £3500 we hatched a plan to give it a quick but thorough overhaul - it’s bound to make us some money…right?
Well, we think we might lose a little more than we bargained for on this one.
No surprises there.
We shipped it down the road to May’s Garage near Malton who diagnosed some clear improvements to be made. Though we were stopped in our tracks for a number of months when the niche, rarely seen, KE Jetronic Fuel Injector system threw up some infuriating problems.
Our restorer Jonny now swears in fluent German after having immersed himself into the complex world of KE Jetronic learning.
Work done on the car:
Our Avant hasn’t been subject to a Bangers nut and bolt restoration and there will be work the new owner may wish to complete but it does come with a new MOT and is ready for a sunday shift to the ‘recycling point’.
Include: Despite our restorers best efforts the Audi still has a running issue which we believe to be fuelling related but with the auction deadline looming we admit this one has beaten us.
Please note:
We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
