If you are looking for a no-expense-spared, fully restored, usable classic…look no further.
We have always been keen on the curious at Bangers & Cash and when we saw this 1970s’ Saab 96, we knew it would end up as one of our TV stars. MSL 923P came with a folder of documents dating back to the original sales receipt and we even met the previous owner who had inherited the 96 from his father who’d driven it from new.
We paid a hammer price of £3100 and since then this 96 has been treated by North Yorkshire’s Classic Car Workshop to one of the most extensive, expensive renovations in Restoring Classics’ history.
Unfortunately, 923P was in terrible shape. While the V4 engine had been protected by its numerous oil leaks and needed little more than a service and some new belts, the bodywork was a different matter.
It seemed like we’d bought plenty of rust, filler and just fresh air so replacement panels were sourced where possible but vast amounts of time - and cash - were spent on cutting out rust, removing filler and fabricating missing metal work.
The Classic Car Workshop then coated the exposed areas with protective bedliner before top coat was applied.
Much of the chrome has been powder-coated (which we believe is a more environmentally sustainable method of renovation), seats repaired and four new tyres fitted.
The team at the Classic Car Workshop claim they have created a Saab 96 that is better than when it left the factory some 50 years ago.
After a restoration costing tens of thousands of pounds, this Saab 96 now comes with 12 months MOT and we believe it offers a genuine everyday useable classic.
Work is too extensive to list but includes:
Gasket set
Oil and filter
Valve clean and reseat
Engine removal and clean
Cylinder head removal and decoking
Full bare-metal body restoration including all rust and filler removal.
Inner rear arch fabrication.
Brake overhaul
Seat repair
Front shock absorber replacement
Fully epoxy primed and 3 coats of paint
Bumper powder-coat
Chrome rub down
Period Saab badges
New tyres
