The vendor has supplied the following:

The vendor of this 1976 VW 1303 S Beetle is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:

We clapped eyes on this left hand drive Beetle back in July 2023. We really were convinced we’d got the bargain of the year paying a hammer price of £5,500 and were very smug in the thinking that the car really didn’t need much work and could be a great candidate for a ‘fast flip’. Some would say facts dictate our confidence is forever misplaced and we are in fact a clueless bunch who can’t tell the difference between and a peach and a lemon.

To find out the Beetle was shipped to the VW fanatics at the ‘Classic Car Workshop’ in Croft. Like us, they were initially quite impressed. XLG 907R was gorgeous, almost shimmery, green, and the hot August sun that you get almost year round this close to Darlington fooled us into thinking a cabriolet wasn’t a stupid idea.

Fast forward a few days, autumn had arrived and the car was being poked and prodded from underneath by Will’s invoice-creating spanner.. Our ‘bargain’ Beetle was shot through with rust. Who saw that one coming?

Work began on our not so fast or flippable, ‘fast flip’, and before we knew it XLG was down to its bare metal. We discovered the original colour at manufacture was actually silver and knew we had to take it back to its true 70’s state.

Work included:

  • Floor and body totally stripped down to identify any corrosion
  • Both rear wings replaced
  • One front wing replaced
  • Body repair sections fabricated
  • Bumper mounts (front and rear) replaced
  • Engine was given a full mechanical overhaul and repainted
  • New carb
  • New wheels and tyres
  • Full paint job - back to its original silver
  • Everything else taken off, cleaned and refitted

The car now boasts a clean MOT certificate good until Jan 2025.

We’ve accepted the fact we might not make our money back on this restoration. But we have kept a beautiful example of a truly iconic vehicle on the road for many years to come and hope the new owner will be very happy with it.

Due to the shift from green to silver - the new owner will need to notify the DVLA of its colour change when they take ownership of the vehicle.

Please Note: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
