The vendor of this 2000 Honda Insight is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:
At Bangers HQ we love pistons, camshafts and occasionally the whiff of 2 stroke oil. But we are also a planet-minded bunch and you occasionally find us in something guaranteed to start an argument with a Mathewson…an EV. So to try to keep all camps happy we spotted something with both engine and battery.
In the late 90s the Honda Insight looked like it had arrived from Mars rather than Japan. Its shape was unseen and its technology unheard of. If any EV is going to become a classic then this is it.
Combining a super-efficient 3 cylinder petrol engine with a hybrid drive-train it was light years ahead of its time, it’s incredulous to think the Ford Escort and the Rover 200 were still being produced at the same time as the Insight.
25 years on the Honda looked just as eye-catching as ever in the Mathewson's yard. Ignoring the heckling from Derek the Insight became ours and zipped off to Tyneside for a light recommissioning.
At JM Imports they are used to their JDM cars…but normally those with 1000bhp+. However, the mechanics all ignored the carbon-wrapped Skylines when our little Honda arrived.
They adored the curves, the electronic dash and tiny button-like alloys. On the ramp they couldn’t believe how solid it was, the engine was purring and the battery appeared to be charging well.
Work needed was minimal:
Please Note: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
