Here at Bangers, we’ve always been partial to an 80s hot hatch and none is more iconic than the VW Golf GTI.
E232 LEG caught our eye with its period details including a BBS bodykit, auto-reverse cassette player and frequently vocal alarm.
After grabbing it for £3,800 we then took it to the VW-obsessed Classic Car Workshop in North Yorkshire.
Up on the ramp the mechanics were amazed at how solid the car was for its 131,000 miles. It didn't need any welding - the only under-body change we made was to remove the towbar (not a car for the caravanner). Paint-wise there was a rust spot near the windscreen that was dug-out, welded, primed and re-painted in factory-fresh alpine white.
Starting was the only real issue with our GTI ie it didn’t. It had been resting on its 14 inch alloys for a number of years and try as we might we couldn't get it to run. A new petrol tank, fuel lines, filters, lift pumps, new injectors all failed to sort the issue but we eventually traced it to the metering head of the fuel injection system. We also changed the timing and auxiliary belts, spark plugs and oil.
Externally we’ve had a cosmetic spruce-up replacing the grill, door handles, wiper arms and tyres (unlike a dealer we didn’t fit the cheapest!)
After spending just shy of £6k it now idles and revs like it’s 1988 and with 12 months MOT it arrives just in time for the British spring - all you need are your shades and your favourite holiday mixtape!
