Bangers logic: One less wheel to worry about = fewer problems. Wrong again! In fact, we hadn’t even thought about the difficulties getting it on to a garage inspection ramp or even into a trailer when we purchased the car in September 2022.
With the help of a manoeuvrable 3rd ramp we negotiated our three wheeled wonder onto the trailer and headed south to MG Mecca, near Norwich. Garage owner, and aptly named, Russ Storer (Google it if you don’t believe us) took on the project of rebuilding FXN 4 with the help of his team.
Work included:
Total strip down of the car
Fabricated new outer steel shell
Strip down of the ash frame, grafted in new wood
Remade the bulkhead
Repaired bonnet panels, and front wings
Make and reconstruct timber frame
Full paint job in original colour ‘Nile Blue’
Repaired door frames and reskinned
New carpets
New wiring loom with correct regulators
Speedometer overhauled
Gearbox drive repaired
New tyres and rebuilt re-enameled wheels
Radiator shell repaired and rechromed (triple plated)
There are several jobs not listed above - as there are too many to mention!
A later rebuilt engine had been fitted by a previous owner - so other than servicing little has been done to this aspect of the vehicle.
Post our 12 month restoration Derek Mathewson said: You’ve salvaged a beauty and deserve a medal - it’s all about preservation, this is gorgeous and should last another 50 years for the buyer’
Due to the complexities of MOT-ing such an old vehicle, we have not put it through the test. We have however added some extra safety features which wouldn’t have been standard for its time (e,g indicators!) Its age means the car is MOT exempt.
Please Note: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
