'Harrietta' was registered on 15th March 1952 in Portsmouth, where she spent her entire working life. After the second world war, there was a chronic shortage of commercial vehicle chassis, and the Ministry of Transport drew up a confidential list of priority allocations which included almost 326 trades or professions, with ice, Minerals and Confectionary second from the bottom, with purveyors of rags and bones at the bottom! It was unsurprising given that ice cream was still seen as a luxury in post-war Britain.
On the 16th of May 1949, Th Ministry of Supply wrote to the Ministry of Transport relaxing the restriction of chassis for commercial van builders which initiated the surge in motorised ice cream vehicles.
The D'Agostino family had been purveyors of ice cream in Portsmouth since Gaetano founded the business in 1905. When they commissioned 'Harrietta' in 1952 they did not want one of the new modern vans built by coachbuilders such as Cummins of Crew, Morrison of Southampton or Henderson's of St Helen's. The family wanted a unique, traditional coach-build conversation, which was as attractive, and ornate, with etched windows just like their original wooden horse-drawn carts.
This delightful van thus entered service in Portsmouth and was worked by the family's matriarch, Harrietta, until she was purchased by an avid collector of historic ice cream vans who restored it and added it to his private collection.
The van was converted from 6-volt to 12-volt and fully restored and sign written. Its current V5C records previous owners as "none" and it also has its original Record of Licenses issued with each stamp issued in Portsmouth with the last one issued on 15th March 1967 when the Ministry of Transport replaced it. A unique van and a wonderful opportunity for someone to put her back to work.
