1955 Bedford Fire Engine

This fantastic piece of history has been owned  by the vendor since 2016.

One of 27 built by the 'Wilsden' company of which the majority carried a 50ft wheeled escape ladder at the back. However, what makes this example more unusual was that it had been built as what was then know as a 'Major Pump' with a large 100 gallon water tank, with the wheeled escape ladder being replaced with a shorter type.

The fire engine was bought by the Dunlop tyre company for on site use at its factory in Erdington. Presumably, the short body style was the criteria for getting into places where there was limited access. At the time this was the largest Tyre factory outside of the United States.

The engine famously took place in what was then the largest fire since world war II when in 1955 over 250 fire engines attended the huge fire at the Halfords Cycle Factory in Birmingham.
