1938 Morgan 4/4

1938 Morgan 4/4

The vendor has kindly supplied the following:

  • Morgan introduced their first 4 wheeler; the 4/4 (4 wheels 4 cylinders) in 1936 with an 1100cc Coventry Climax engine with overhead inlet and sidevalve exhausts and either a Meadows or Moss Gearbox. The light chassis and suspension gave it nimble handling and is still the design used today in the classic Morgans.
  • This example was first registered by Jacks in Belfast in 1938 and has the Meadows box. It was fully restored by George Proudfoot, the “flat rad” specialist in 1995 with a new chassis and frame.
  • The engine required a further major rebuild in 2012-13 by Milford Vintage Engineering in Kirkmichael with a new Phoenix crank and rods, radiator replacement and gearbox rebuild. Machining by Agra in Dundee. An electric water pump has been fitted but otherwise it is completely standard.
  • It starts on the button and has good oil pressure as you would expect with the rebuild and has only covered 1500 miles since. There was some damage in the gearbox with a chipped tooth in second on the layshaft so there it is slightly noisy on overrun in 2nd . It has full and effective hood and sidescreens and is a delight to drive. There is a comprehensive file showing the recent history and receipts for the 2012/3 work of over £24,000. It is MOT’d until November 2020.

We believe that the above is an honest appraisal by the vendor!
