1983 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus

1983 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus

Purchased by the vendor back in 1986 at less than 3 years old.

The vendor spotted an advertisement for the car in the famous 'Motoring News'. We actually have the original advert from January 1986.

A phone call was made, the farms Land Rover was fired up, trailer attached and a 400 mile 10 hour road trip took place. Despite the Land Rover's legendary 4x4 capabilities the vendor couldn't make it back to the Farm upon his return due to heavy snow fall. The Sunbeam and trailer was left at the local pub while a tractor was sourced to finish the final leg of the journey.

Just Three MOT test certificates have been issued for the car and these are as follows:-

  • September 1986 @ 26,794 miles
  • October 1987 @ 34,696 miles
  • November 1988 @ 38,900 miles

The car was parked up in the summer of 89' initially due to the fact the vendor had the use of a far more economical diesel car adding 'It wasn't the cheapest thing to run as a young lad' !!

Then, when it was time to have some fun it was found the cars fuel pump was playing up. We hear of so many of cases like this with the owners thinking... 'I'll take a look at that later'..... 40 years later and the vendor hadn't got round to investigating the fault!!

This fantastic story doesn't finish there. A 'New old stock' bodyshell is also supplied with the car. This was originally purchased through 'Skip Brown Cars' Anyone reading this who has an interest in Peugeot Talbot would of heard of this legendary company. The shell was originally shipped to a French company and converted to LHD. It was never used in France but instead found its way back to Skip Browns to be converted back into RHD form.... and amazingly was still never used.!

What a fantastic story which will hopefully finally come to a conclusion with a new owner.

As many of you will know only too well. The model was the brainchild of Des O'dell. After witnessing Ford dominating the rally scene he decided to take action. Initially placing a Lotus engine in an Avenger before fitting a Lotus engine into a prototype Sunbeam which the competition department had 'kicking about'

Production started and In the hands of Henri Toivonen the model spectacularly won the 1980 RAC rally. In fact a Lotus Sunbeam was placed first, third and fourth. Quite an achievement.

The example we have here is believed to be an 'Avon' model. As production outstripped demand with cars gathering dust at Wartford Gap, two 'special' models were produced. This being the 'Avon' and 'Arbury' models. It is suggested that only around 100 examples remain on the road from a production run of 2308. With the car being super quick and light on the rear end ..... and many owners attempted to drive like Mr Toivonen, the inevitable happened.!

We are open 7 days a week here at Thornton Le Dale for pre-sale viewing, although a quick phone call prior to travelling is advised.

Don't forget. We personally collect FREE of charge around 90% of all our auction vehicles.
