1992 Ford Escort RS 2000

1992 Ford Escort RS 2000

The vendor has supplied the following information.

Originally supplied direct from Boreham and built by Hendy Ford Motorsport to compete in the Mobil 1 RS 2000 rallye sport series in 1992 and 1993, this was a series of 7 different disciplines which included circuit racing, rally stages, hillclimb, sprint’s, trail driving, auto-test and an economy run, the series was even shown on SKY sports. This series attracted plenty of famous names such as Alister McCrae, Dai Lleywellin, Richard Burns, Tiff Needel, Tony Mason and Tony Dron. This particular car was driven predominantly by Stephen Hendy and Brian Farminer and by Trevor Smith for the Auto tests. All the brochures relating to the series are present with the car and the entire series can be viewed on YouTube. Only 14 of these cars were built and I believe this is the only surviving example.
The car was then further developed into group n spec where it was campaigned by Stephen Hendy and various other drivers until it was sold to Marcus Dodd of Sunseeker sales UK Ltd in 1997. The car was transferred into Tom Whittaker’s name soon after Marcus Dodd bought it although I believe it was still campaigned in the sunseeker livery (it still had some of the sunseeker livery on it when I acquired it 20 years later). The car was then sold to its current registered keeper in February 2002 giving it just 3 former keepers and very low mileage.
All the cars history is present including its FISA and FIA homologation papers, every MOT from new showing a genuine 24k miles. Thousands of pounds worth of receipts for parts, copies of the old log books in previous owner’s names, old competition insurance certificates, RAC and MSA log books etc. Pretty much every piece of paperwork to back up the cars history and provenance. The roll cage has scrutineer stickers from many rallies including the network Q rally 1995 even as far away as Barbados in 2001 and everywhere in between.

Spec includes, MOMO steering wheel, safety devices roll cage, lifeline-line fire extinguisher, trip meter, intercom, hand held extinguishers, map light etc. The corbeau pro-race seats and sparco harnesses are out of date but have been retained to keep the car original. The gearbox is an MT75 Quaife with ATB diff and Helix clutch, Suspension is Bilstein with Group A top mounts with fixed camber, the rears are bilstein magnesium adjustable height coilovers and have just been rebuilt, brakes are AP Formula big brake kit with AP600 fluid. The wheels are the original set it used while competing in the RS2000 rallye sport series which are engraved Hendy Ford to prevent getting mixed up with the other competitors at the tyre truck. The front bumper is even the original and still has the holes in it where the Hella spotlights were screwed to straight to it rather than mounted on brackets to prevent vibration, this is extremely rare for a rally car of this age to still have. It still retains its original Hendy Ford dealer number plates.
The engine would have been standard when running in the Mobil 1 series but I’m pretty sure it has undergone several modifications since although I have no real idea what they may be. It did come with loads of spares including what look to be different spec ECU’s and some standard cam’s etc so I assume the ones in it are up-rated versions. One thing’s for sure “it’s no slouch”.
The engine and running gear have all been checked over and recommissioned where necessary, it’s had a full glass out panels off respray and been re-fitted with the Hendy Ford livery that it had in its early years of competition. The interior has been left completely un-changed for fear of losing the cars originality. The car has recently had a 5 page feature as well as the centre spread calendar in Classic ford magazine and is a true piece of Ford motorsport history.

A very rare car that is still affordable.
