The vendor has provided the following:

The vendor of this 1973 Volvo 144 DL is the Bangers & Cash Restoring Classics team. They write:

We bought this 144 back in March 2024, when Dave had described it as a ‘lovely straight car’. Not surprising when we discovered the Volvo was showing only 15k miles on the clock. We reckon we bagged a bargain at £8250. With most of our vehicles we go on to learn that what we’ve won isn’t a showroom condition snip but a polished up pile of bills…not this one!

We took it down the road to family run firm ‘Dyrdals’ in York, where Volvo Master Technician Howard Cram could give it the light recommissioning it deserved. Howard actually learnt to drive in a 144, so he knew exactly how it should feel and handle.

Other than the fact it didn’t start, the main problem with FNR 916L was several large patches of rust on the top half of the car. So after all the mechanical works, it was shipped across the A64 to Elvington for Ian Ellis at Motor Body Cosmetics to work his magic. After some deliberation it was unwise to attempt to just touch over the areas of corrosion as we would’ve ended up with 50 shades of red. So a repaint of the top half of the car was carried out. The blend between all the panels isn’t perfect but we feel it’s plenty smarter than before but keeps elements of originality.

Work included:

  • Refurbished fuel tank
  • New exhaust
  • Tune engine
  • Cambelt
  • Wheels
  • Brake service
  • Repaint on boot, bonnet and roof

Please Note: We take great pride in restoring our vehicles but they are classics and will no doubt have imperfections. Please do your own checks before bidding.
